For something more of a bolder tone go with a tube driver of some sort and for a more settle sound go with an overdrive. Both work really well it is just that one sounds more harmonious and one sounds grungier. However having these two different components help to build what you want without having to really add any extra equalizers at all.
Another great recommendation is to have a compression that creates a deep sound when it has a lot of sustain in it, this results in overdrives that are mild and leaves everything else clean. For the overdrives that are heavier this comes from a tube driver that is at its maximum. All of this information can be overwhelming as well as confusing but once you have everything you need and try it out you will be fine. After all it is practice that makes perfect and in the end you just need one of the best compressor pedal you can get, a decent equalizer and a nice place to set up and you will be fine.
